Experiment for the Week!

This week's experiment is about growing crystals! Click the link below to watch a short video with directions for making your own crystal covered snowflake. You will need some Borax, a pipe cleaner, and some hot water. Borax can be found in the laundry section of many grocery stores. Pipe cleaners come from craft stores such as Michael's or Ben Franklin Crafts. Give it a try!

Do you know why the crystals grow on the snowflake? When you poured the Borax into the water it was hot. The Borax all dissolved in the hot water. The molecules in hot water are farther apart than the molecules in cold water. As the water cools off there is less room in the water for the Borax. The Borax is forced out of the water and it attaches itself to the sides of the cup and to the snowflake.
